Forum: GratefulDead Subject: what new bands are out there?

I've accepted a long time ago that no one can do what the Dead did live but what new and current bands do any of you groove on? Most everything I listen to seems to be older but I'd love to find a current band to check out. About the only two fairly current bands that I listen to a lot are Wilco and Ween and they've been around enough now to not be considered new ( even though they both are constantly putting out fresh stuff ).

This is a band that brought out the old Grateful Dead vibe when I saw them recently.. The David Nelson Band. David Gans opened for them on the last tour, and called them on his radio show the greatest jam band out there, and the band he always wished he had. I don't know if Dave qualifies as a "new band", but they opened up my ears! Check these performances I got to see on their tour over here:

I know all about the Dave Nelson Band - shamefully under rated. Yeah they definitely bring out the GD vibe

Here's a shameless plug for my band DORIAN VIBE. We're based in Denver and play happening jamtronica.

We're playing this Friday opening for Ground Up at Pete's Monkey Bar (formerly Dulcinea's) near the Fillmore in downtown Denver.

http://www.myspace.com/dorianvibe

we've got some videos up on Facebook as well. e

Well for live music you already have the two non-dead bands i listen to most. Yarn (as per Arb's suggestion) and RRE where High Flow was the one who pointed me to shows initially and I will be seeing for the second time next saturday with amosearle. Yarn was here last week but as much as I would have liked to seen them, it did not fit into my schedule. RBNW is correct, RRE has been around for about 9 years so hardly new but if you haven't given them a listen yet they are well worth it.

As implied above, I still consider "90s" new, and the "2000s" positively cutting edge current! I can barely manage enough time for my early era shows (what, a quarter of what you all have to contend with?), and a few other obsessions (CREAM, NYoung, WhStripes, Kottke, Grisman...not many more that I have 3-5 or more shows/CDs of). If it wasn't for my kids, I'd be completely out of the loop...

Terrific tunes. You won't be disappointed. The harmonica solo in CC Rider is unreal.

I am familiar with From Good Homes, Todd's former band. You might also want to give Shockenaw Mountain Boys( http://www.archive.org/details/ShockenawMountainBoys ), Blue Sparks From Hell( http://www.archive.org/details/BlueSparksFromHell ) and Tim Carbone & Friends( http://www.archive.org/details/tcarbone2010-03-20.matrix.360exp.flac16 ) a listen.

I have a friend the is huge on New Monsoon. I haven't listened to much, but have been pretty impressed with what I've heard.

http://www.archive.org/details/NewMonsoon

And this one(although it could be termed a "super group")meets the "new" criteria as well as anyone playing today.

http://thecontribution.net/

Just found this at The Archive:

Disc 1:
01 Intro
02 Come Around
03 Time was only Yesterday
04 Don't Do It (The Band)
05 Steady Ride
06 Samsara
07 Fear of Nothing
08 The Song Remains the Same (Led Zepplin)

Disc 2:
01 Set II Lead in with the Cowtown Strings
02 Hoedown (Aaron Copeland's Rodeo Suite)
03 Which Way World
04 Wind Me Up
05 Give me Shelter (Rolling Stones)
06 Not This Time
07 Don't Let Go (Isaac Hayes)
08 Let the Children Play (Santana)
09 Year of Jubilee

Encore:
10 Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney and Wings)

Hey J. ... last summer i might have linked you to UU's suggestion, Railroad Earth, a fine band, but i barely listen to them anymore since Yarn came on my horizon around Sept. last year. Here's a recent recording that i've been enjoying quite a lot:

For something different, if you can tolerate RAP/Hip Hop (yeah, most albums might have 1-2 listenable songs) try the Mos Def album "The Ecstatic." Its from 2009, so fairly "new."

You have just got to listen to this CREAM show I have from Oct 67!

JK, of course...but, I had to chuckle when reading (between the lines?) about finding old bands. That's about all I do..."new to me" or even just "new shows" to me...

I have to keep reminding myself that saying "White Stripes!" doesn't make me up on "current" bands...

JOTS -

These guys freakin jammed -

The Brew

http://www.archive.org/details/TheBrew

Holy Ghost Tent Revival - any band with a banjo and a trombone is by definition amazing. They are a FloydFest repeat favorite.

http://www.archive.org/details/HolyGhostTentRevival

Bobby Lee Rodgers Trio. I will listen to his Gibson ES-335 run through a Leslie amp all damn day. Just to mix things up he also plays a '47 Deering Crossfire banjo like there's no tomorrow.

http://www.archive.org/details/BobbyLeeRodgers

Emmitt-Nershi Band, when Cheese meets Salmon. Billy Nershi from String Cheese Incident and Drew Emmitt from Leftover Salmon

http://www.archive.org/details/EmmittNershiBand

Umphrey's McGee are very talented musicians and put on a great show - I think we've had this conversation before.

http://www.archive.org/details/UmphreysMcGee

Steep Canyon Rangers - mostly mainstream bluegrass, but they can push the edges

http://www.archive.org/details/SteepCanyonRangers

Outformation - similar sound to Widespread Panic, but younger and a little more classic rock influenced.

http://www.archive.org/details/Outformation

Listen to all of these today and give a book report to the forum by noon tomorrow...........

Not new, but Dakini only recently got a show or two uploaded. Should appeal to any deadhead. Another older band, Jemimah Puddleduck, didn't have any new shows for ages, but a new one appeared a day or two ago.

They are both on the archive, if you want links...let me know. Problem with Natural Breakdown, they don't play that often.
